Charitable consultancies are small businesses, just as small charities are. The web abounds with helpful information.
I have found the Better Business magazine, which is targeted at micro businesses, invaluable since I started over three years ago, and the website has a lot of the content. They also have a lot of helpful links to business resources for the one or two person business.
You can find some very good resources and comprehensive business links at Business Matters.
The Government has a number of information sites aimed at small businesses. Try Business Link for English resources and Business Connect for services available in Wales. You could also try The Enterprise Zone, which “is a gateway to business information for SMEs”. Yes, you are actually a Small or Medium-sized Enterprise!
And if all else fails you can always try the comprehensive Inland Revenue site.
Most professional bodies have web sites with varying amount of useful information. The most obvious for ACT members is the Institute of Management Consultants. I also periodically use the Operational Research Society site and the Royal Statistical Society .
Another set of relevant links is provided at UK Consulting Resources, which is maintained by AXSIS. And then there’s the Freelance Centre, which is a bit frenetic, but has a lot of useful information. Their On-Line Magazine is particularly thought provoking.
And if you’re involved in training, the Training Zone is a must. Their free regular email newsletter is excellent.
